Celebrate Christmas 2020 with Us!

We wish you all a Merry Christmas!
We are making the service available from Christmas Eve at midday until the end of Christmas Day so you can sing along to all great carols as you prepare for the big day.

As our regulars will know, on the Friday before Christmas the Fishermen’s Museum usually hosts a Carol Service. This is always a well attended evening with mulled wine, mince pies and plenty of singing! We always enjoy this special evening and know that this tradition is important to many of you in the Old Town. 

Because this year has been ‘different’ we had to get our thinking caps on…  we discussed all different ways we could bring a live event to you safely and decided it wasn’t really an option this year. So we fell back on our archive and discovered this gem from the year 2000! A touching snippet of nostalgia for seeing out a rough year.

 

 Back in 2000 this Carol Service was recorded on video tape then transferred to DVD so please forgive the wobbles and the less than HD sound quality! We wonder if any of you can spot yourselves? Let us know if you do! There is a downloadable order of service from that year so you know what is going on. You can also pick up a printed version from the museum.  Let’s celebrate Christmas 2020 together!

The year 2000 was also significant for us as we had the, then, newly commissioned millennium stained glass  panel by Alan Wright installed, celebrating fishing and its community and St Nicholas the patron saint of fishermen, sailors and shipping.

Newsletter – September 2020

Seems a long time since we’ve had a Newsletter from the OHPS due to the enforced closures of the Fishermen’s Museum and the History House. Both are now open but with reduced hours so please do check the website and social media for the current opening times as they are changing from month to month and are subject to change at short notice.

As the winter draws closer we need our wonderful visitors to support us. Our usual Christmas cards and Blue Stevens calendar are available from the Museum, History House and our online shop, along with other gifts and souvenirs. Hidden-Nature-On-Hastings-Stade

As we were unable to take people on guided walks for Heritage Open Days we explored the theme of Hidden Nature and discovered many links in our area that we hope people may not have known about and discover these places with us via PowerPoint.

Temporary External Exhibition – Bringing the Inside Out

 As our opening hours are brief at the moment and we haven’t been able to create a new exhibition for you this year we have decided to make this previous exhibition available externally.

Put August 1st in your diaries! From 1st August to 9th August the doors will be open from 11am to 4pm everyday as it will be Old Town Carnival Week. There will be an exhibition from the Hastings Local History group ‘Artists in Hastings’ and Bygone of Hastings Carnivals

We’re Good To Go which means you can be certain that the Hastings Fishermen’s Museum is following government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, has a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing. 

Your visit to the museum will be a little different at the moment while we work through this transition period.  

  • For the time being access to the boat will be restricted 
  • And our film corner won’t be live to prevent people gathering in that small area. However we have made these available to watch on our website https://www.ohps.org.uk/gallery-film-corner-online/ 

We have implemented a few changes around the museum to help make your visit as comfortable as possible for you and for our staff:

  • Firstly, we ask, please postpone your visit if you have any symptoms of a cough, sneezing or generally feeling unwell, however mild (Please follow this link for further information https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/)
  • We will ask you to wait at the door before entering 
  • Speak to a member of staff to complete a track and trace form* and sanitize hands
  • For everyone’s convenience please follow the floor markings and direction arrows
  • Please use the hand sanitizer provided around the museum
  • There is a Perspex screen at the shop counter 
  • And finally please be kind to staff as these are not our restrictions, they are in place to protect us all and keep this much loved attraction open.

Other than those few things, everything is the same! Everything has been deep cleaned, the floor has been painted and Enterprise has been spruced up to make her last for many more years to come. In short, the museum looks amazing, please come and see us!!

*We would like to record your details to support NHS Test and Trace. This information will only be used where necessary to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The information will be held securely on this form in the office and will be shredded after the required 21 days.

GDPR allows us to request contact information from staff and visitors and share it with NHS Test and Trace to support public health and safety. It will not be used for other purposes, including marketing, profiling, analysis or other purposes unrelated to contact tracing.

Covid-19 UPDATE

Hello! We hope you are all safe and well.  THERE is much excitement here!! The gears are grinding into action behind the scenes. We’re just waiting for a few safety measures to be put in place before we can open. As with everywhere, your visit will be a different experience but we are trying to keep things as ‘normal’ as we can. There will be a 2 metre social distancing rule and please, no touching.
We are working towards flinging the museum doors open on Saturday 18th July and Sunday 19th July from 2-5pm then every weekend until we are on our feet but check our social media for up to date information.

The History House is working towards a date for opening so watch this space.

Jack in the Green 2020

Regulars will know that traditionally this weekend would have seen the Jack released from the museum but of course due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control this wasn’t possible but a virtual event was put together and you can their success here: Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green

All OHPS Walks Cancelled Until Further Notice

Hello all, we hope you are staying safe and sane. We are still under lockdown for the foreseeable future but as soon as we know what is happening we will let you know.
